Why RT60 matters in a mix
You rarely measure true RT60 on a plugin, but the idea maps straight to the decay time control. A snare that needs to snap in a trap beat wants a short decay. A pad that should float under a chorus can carry a longer tail. Plate reverb: the studio classic
Plate reverb is not a room. A transducer drives a large thin metal plate; contact pickups capture the vibrations as a dense artificial reverb.[3] EMT introduced the EMT 140 in 1957 with a roughly 1 m × 2 m steel plate and adjustable decay roughly in the 1–5 second range via a damping felt. Routing decides whether reverb glues a mix or turns it into soup. Two patterns cover almost every producer session.
- Send / return (aux) One reverb on a return track. Channels send a dry copy into it; the return is usually 100% wet. Multiple sources share the same space, which is how you build a coherent "room" for vocals, snare, and keys.
- Insert (in-line) Reverb sits on the channel itself with wet/dry blend. Best for sound design — infinite tails, gated special effects, or a vocal that needs its own private hall that nothing else enters.
Default for mixing: send. Default for creative FX chains and one-off textures: insert. If you put a different full-wet plate on every track, each instrument lives in a different building. One shared return (or two: short room + long plate) keeps the arrangement readable.

Route vocals, snare, and pads to that return. Start conservative — raise the send until the source gains depth, then stop before consonants smear. - EQ the return, not only the source
High-pass the reverb (often roughly 150–300 Hz) to protect the kick and bass. Optionally low-pass harsh highs so the tail sits behind the dry signal. - Automate pre-delay and send level
Longer pre-delay in verses for clarity; slightly more send in choruses for lift. Automate the return mute on sparse intros if the tail feels empty.
Parameters That Actually Change the Mix
Most plugins expose more knobs than you need on day one. Prioritize these, in roughly this order.

Mixing tips that hold across genres
Reverb does not fix a bad dry balance. Get levels, panning, and compression in the right ballpark first. Then use reverb to place instruments front-to-back.
High-pass the reverb return. Low-frequency reverb energy is a common cause of muddy 200–400 Hz builds that no EQ on the dry kick can fix alone.
Duck the reverb under the dry vocal with light sidechain or automation if the tail masks consonants. The space should open between phrases, not fight every syllable.
Use fewer, better spaces. One short room for drums + one plate for vocals covers most beat and pop sessions. Extra halls on every bus is how home mixes turn foggy.

Vocals

Leaving full low end in the return — high-pass the reverb; protect kick and 808.
Matching every reference's wash without matching arrangement density — sparse tracks can carry long tails; dense type-beats usually cannot.
